All Saints' Day

All Saints' Day is a feast of the Church which takes place on November 1. It is not a coincidence that it is on the day after Hallowe'en. The word Hallowe'en actually means "eve of the holy ones, or saints."

Although All Saints' Day celebrates everyone who is in heaven, here at St. John's School we like to give a nod to some of our favorite canonized saints, that is, those people who have been recognized by the Church as having exceptional virtue.

Our second graders are the leaders for this feast. Each student dresses up as one of the saints. At our special school Mass, they say a little about the history and qualities of their saints. Over the years, we have learned for example, that St. Patrick was a slave in Ireland, that St. Cecilia is the patron saint of music, and that St. Lucia wears a crown of candles for her feast on Dec. 7 in Sweden.

Our All Saints' Day celebration is a fun and memorable way for the children to grow in knowledge and virtue, Ask any 7th or 8th grader who was here in 2nd grade. They always remember which saint they portrayed!
